CHINA: THE NEXT DESTINATION OF THE FLAMENCO BIENNIAL
The cities of Beijing and Hong Kong will host the Flamenco Gala. Merche Esmeralda, Belén Maya and Olga Pericet, among others, will perform in the Children’s Theatre and in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre’s Grand Theatre.
The complementary activities of workshops, film showings and round tables will be held in the Cervantes Institute.
Promotional activity for the Flamenco Biennial, which started at the beginning of 2007, continues apace. The Biennial was present in the first quarter in the Festival 07 London and the Flamenco Festival USA, in order to approach a market that is potentially interested in the world of flamenco.
On the 13, 14, 16, 17 and 18 November the Flamenco Biennial will visit Southeast Asia, a key region in its international promotional tour. In the second half of the year, China was selected as a destination, and particularly its capital Beijing and the cosmopolitan, commercial city of Hong Kong. The visit will coincide with the participation of the Spanish Embassy in China; the Year of Spain in China; and the preliminary activities for the Olympic Games, which will be held in 2008.
Within the frame of the Mediterranean Arts Festival in Hong Kong, the Flamenco Gala will take place on the 14 November in Beijing, the capital and cultural, political and social heart of the country. Merche Esmeralda, Belén Maya, Olga Pericet, Manuel Liñán, Marcos Flores and Daniel Doña will perform at the Children’s Theatre and subsequently on the 16, 17 and 18 they will appear in Hong Kong in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre’s Grand Theatre.
In addition to these
two programmed gala events, several activities will take place in the Cervantes Institute on the 13 November. Guitar, dance and cajón workshops will be taught by
Paco Cruz, Manuel Liñán and Sergio Martínez respectively. The film “Flamenco” by Carlos Saura will be shown. This will be followed by a round table on the topic: “Flamenco dance: challenges for the future”. Participants in the round table will include Merche Esmeralda, Belén Maya (who have leading roles in the film) and Domingo González, the director of the Flamenco Biennial.
One of the aims of the Flamenco Biennial (before the start of the fifteenth festival from 10 September to 11 October 2008) is to bring flamenco closer to countries that are many miles from Spain, but that represent emerging markets. The idea is to demonstrate that Seville, the city of celebration, is an excellent tourist and cultural destination.
Subsequent visits will take the Biennial to countries such as France and to the city of London, ensuring once more that the festival is an essential, benchmark event for the most universal Art.
